Nothing extraordinary in 2013 general stream GSHSEB results
At 66.15%, the result in 2013 is 1.93% lower than 2012 general stream results
Std XII general stream of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) students who were expecting bumper results on the lines of the science stream were a highly disappointed lot on Monday. For, at 66.51%, the general stream, vocational stream and ucchatar uttar buniyadi stream results for 2013 turned out to be the lowest in nine years.
According to the officials at the GSHSEB, around 5,32,776 students registered for the general stream exam and 5,18,623 students appeared. Of them, 3,44,938 students, around 66.51%, passed the exam. The result in 2013 is 1.93% lower than 2012 general stream results. 2004 results registered 66.16%, which was lower than this year. Bifurcation of stream-wise result suggests, general stream (comprising commerce and arts) registered 66.43%, vocational 74.03% and ucchatar uttar buniyadi 73.95%.
Std XII general stream exam was conducted in around 350 centres, of which, Zalod centre with 97.71% scored the highest results, while Dwarka scraped the bottom with 35.74%. Similarly, Sabarkantha district has registered the highest result with 81.91% and Porbander scored the lowest at 47.13%.
Around 65 schools in Gujarat have got 100% result, which is significantly lower than last years’ 199 schools which could achieve cent percent results. Unlike last year’s 33 schools that got less than 10% results, this year only four schools registered the dubious feat.
Of the successful lot, 92 students have got A1 grade and 6,602 students got A2 grade. Though the GSHSEB has not announced a compiled data of subjects, accounts seems to have been most commerce stream students’ Achilles heel. GSHSEB’s decision not to declare subject results has raised doubt on its intention to keep weaker points under wraps.
Chairman of the GSHSEB, RR Varsani said that the poor results this time may be because of two reasons. “Around 78,000 students appeared for the Std XII general stream exam from open school. We do not know how they have performed, but that could be a reason too. Another reason is strict vigil kept by the board at the suspect examination centres. This did not allow students to cheat in the exam halls,†he said. Interestingly, the number of cheating cases registered in 2013 is 82, 43 cases more than the last year as in 2012 only 39 cheating cases had been registered.
State education minister, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, however, did not see anything objectionable even when result is one of the lowest in last nine years. “It is just 2% less than last year’s result. And there can not be any specific reason for such low result,†he said.
