CBSE students outshine state in WBJEE

Breaking free from the shackles of coaching centres and private tuitions, students with merit emerged victorious in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) following the board’s decision to radically alter the question paper and make it tougher. The change also upset the dominance of state board students in the entrance exam, with CBSE students securing more top positions.

Among the top 100 ranks, CBSE students bagged 44 while HS students bagged 32. Sixteen positions went to candidates who had appeared in the ISC examination. Even in the top-1,000 list, CBSE held sway and bagged 507 positions. While 289 went to HS, 139 positions were secured by ISC students

“A reason why students from outside Bengal are opting for WBJEE is because they want to study a subject of their choice. The infrastructure in colleges of West Bengal is comparatively better than many other states. The standard of faculty is also good. Hence, those students who will fail to make a cut in IIT-JEE may decide to take up a seat in Bengal if they have secured a good rank in WBJEE. The placement scene is bad across the country and not just here,” said a senior Jadavpur University teacher.

Many feel the results will delve a blow to tutorial homes and coaching centres that ensured success by making students solve past question papers. This did not inculcate scientific thinking among students.

The results also proved that what was once a reality is now a myth. While students of West Bengal Higher Secondary Examinations traditionally did better than those from other boards, CBSE students have fared much better than HS students.
